From June 7th to August 3rd, 2024, 10 Tsinghua University “Amgen Scholars” from top universities in Asia completed their eight-week summer research training within the Tsinghua campus. This year’s Amgen Scholars Program, for the first time, collaborated with the Summer International School, allowing young talents from around the world to exchange ideas and share wisdom on the same platform.
Professor Chen Ligong is the initiator of the Tsinghua Amgen Scholars Program, the Deputy Dean of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the Program Director. In the program review and summary part, he said, “Since its launch in 2019, the Tsinghua Amgen Scholars Program has entered its fifth year. Over the past five years, we have fortunately witnessed dozens of vibrant global young scholars joining our big family. They have spent memorable summers at Tsinghua University and accumulated valuable practical experience. We are not only committed to attracting potential students and scholars from around the world to our university, but also expect Tsinghua University, as the host of the program, to take on the important task of cultivating first-class talents with an international perspective who can serve the country, society, and all humanity.”
In 2018, it was successfully selected for the Amgen Scholars Program, becoming the only university in China to host this program, which is organized by the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Scientific Research and Study
During the eight-week summer training, the Amgen Scholars followed their mentors into various laboratories, participating in biomedical research projects under the guidance of senior researchers and doctoral supervisors. Through one-on-one guidance and continuous practice, the scholars not only accumulated experimental experience, but also established deep friendships with mentors and lab students, as well as connections with the academic community.
Throughout the event, the students wandered in the hall of knowledge, and each scholar’s lecture deepened their understanding and mastery of subject knowledge. In the lecture titled “From Chip Design to Genomics”, Professor Li Yinqing built a bridge connecting traditional engineering and modern biomedicine from a multidimensional perspective. In the lecture titled “Chinese History and TCM”, Professor Wang Jinghui explored how to accurately convey the theory of traditional Chinese medicine to the world. In the lecture titled “Introduction to Low Power Wireless”, Professor Zhang Milin provided important support for the development of brain science. And in the lecture titled “Bio-integrated Electronics”, Associate Professor Sheng Xing delved into the application of novel semiconductor materials and devices in biomedical fields. Instructor Zhang Chao explored how large audio-visual language models understand our physical world, and Professor Jia Hongyang brought profound insights into the future development trends of computing technology to the audience.
The scholars led the audience through the profound knowledge of artificial intelligence and computing systems. Each student was endowed with the courage and dream to explore the unknown, jointly drawing a new chapter of technology integration.
Amgen Scholars Asia Symposium
Furthermore, invited by the Amgen Foundation, 10 Scholars were led by Vice Dean Chen Ligong of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Professor Du Juanjuan and faculty members of the program to participate in the Amgen Scholars Asia Symposium at the University of Tokyo in Japan. At the symposium, over one hundred scholars from Tsinghua University, Kyoto University, the University of Tokyo, and the National University of Singapore gathered to report on their experimental experiences and gains from the program.
During the session of poster presentation, Professor Chen Ligong and Professor Du Juanjuan from the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Tsinghua University participated as judges in the scoring of posters from the four universities. The scholars prepared posters showcasing their academic achievements during the program, which were displayed in the exhibition hall. And they also provided oral presentations, exchanging insights with teachers and students.
Professor Du Juanjuan was invited to deliver an interesting and profound speech to the scholars at the scene.
As representatives of Tsinghua Amgen Scholars, Chen Zhihao and Hua Yue also made on-site presentations.
Finally, the three-day Asia Symposium concluded successfully, and it is believed that this will become one of the most unforgettable moments for all the scholars.
Chinese Culture Experiencing
On the evening of July 8th, 2024, the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Tsinghua University hosted a unique interdisciplinary exchange event for international summer school students, the “2024 THU Summer School Carnival”. Amgen Scholars from the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Tsinghua University gathered together with international students from the Department of Electronic Engineering and the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature at Tsinghua University. Through activities such as “Impressions of Tsinghua”, “Tai Chi Baduanjin”, “Chinese Calligraphy”, and “Chinese Poetry Recitation”, students from different countries enhanced their friendships through intellectual exchanges and cultural experiencing.
In addition, to enrich the scholars’ extracurricular life, the Amgen Scholars Program also organized a series of Beijing cultural exploration activities. The scholars collectively visited the National Museum, experiencing the richness of Chinese history and culture. They climbed the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, not only exercising their bodies but also appreciating the grandeur of the Great Wall and feeling the perseverance of the Chinese nation. They also visited the Summer Palace and Jingshan Park, getting close to Beijing’s natural gardens and deeply experiencing the unique culture and humanistic feelings of this city.
The successful hosting of the series of events not only provided a platform for Amgen Scholars to showcase themselves and exchange ideas, but also promoted their deep understanding and identification with Beijing and Tsinghua University. In the future, the Amgen Scholars Program will continue to uphold the concept of openness and inclusiveness, creating more diversified learning and living experiences for scholars. The Program will help them continue to advance on the path of scientific research, and also contribute to promoting cultural exchanges and cooperation between China and foreign countries.
Since its inception, the Tsinghua Amgen Scholars Program has received strong support from departments such as the International Office of Tsinghua University, the Academic Affairs Office of Tsinghua University, and the Tsinghua University Education Foundation. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude.
