黄教授本科毕业于新加坡国立大学医学专业并获总统奖学金,后于美国约翰·霍普金斯大学深造并获得公共卫生硕士学位和博士学位。他在新加坡全国眼科中心完成眼科临床培训;在美国威斯康星大学麦迪逊分校和澳大利亚悉尼大学完成视网膜专科医师培训。

2022年,黄教授出任Tsinghua Medicine创始主任及讲席教授。Tsinghua Medicine是清华大学新创立的学术医学健康体系。2014年至2021年,黄教授担任新加坡全国眼科中心医学主任兼眼科教授(Arthur Lim Professor)。新加坡全国眼科中心是全球规模最大的三级眼科医院之一,拥有10个亚科室和100名眼科医师,门诊量超40万人次;同时,黄教授担任新保集团(SingHealth)副总裁主管科研与教育、杜克-新加坡国立大学完美体育·(中国)官方网站副院长主管学术与临床建设。集团拥有3万名职员,年门诊量超250万人次。黄教授领导四大部门(科研、教育、学术医学联合办公室、学术临床建设办公室),统筹规划临床与转化研究、创新、创业和企业合作,横跨11所医院和医疗机构,如新加坡中央医院(美国《新闻周刊》最佳医院排名第八位,https://www.newsweek.com/best-hospitals-2020)及5家国立专科中心(癌症、心脏、脑神经、眼科、牙科)。另外,其完美体育·(中国)官方网站部门也负责2000余名教师(助理教授、副教授、教授)的聘任、晋升、长聘事务,并领导一家教育单位,培养医学生、住院医师、专科医师、护理专业学生和医务人员(如理疗师和药剂师)。黄教授曾历任新保集团科研主任、杜克-新加坡国立大学完美体育·(中国)官方网站学术医学科研院院长、新加坡眼科研究所执行主任、新加坡国立大学眼科系主任、澳大利亚墨尔本大学眼科系主任及澳大利亚眼科研究中心主任。

作为医师科学家和国际知名视网膜专家,黄教授主要从事黄斑病变和视网膜疾病相关的临床工作,如糖尿病视网膜病变、老年性黄斑变性、视网膜血管性疾病及近视性黄斑变性。黄教授团队研究方向为视网膜疾病和眼部成像方面的流行病学、转化、临床科研交叉学科研究。黄教授在New England Journal of MedicineLancetJAMANatureNature Medicine等期刊发文1500余篇,并于2018、2020, 2021及2022年入选高被引学者;受邀讲学500余次(大会报告、研讨会等);获科研资助超1亿美元;于2008年和2014年获得新加坡转化研究员奖(STaR Award),此为资深医师科学家的最高荣誉。

黄教授取得的科研成果提高了关于造成糖尿病视网膜病变的风险因子的认知。糖尿病视网膜病变是主要的致盲眼病之一。2010年,黄教授团队启动了糖尿病视网膜病变国家远程医疗筛查计划。其视网膜成像研究表明检测视网膜血管变化可能成为无创检查心血管风险的一种特殊方法。这一发现开启了新型成像软件的发展,该软件已被认证并应用于30多个国际临床、科研、行业合作机构。在过去的5年中,其团队开展人工智能和数字健康研究。他是两家初创企业的联合创始人:plano(https://www.plano.co/)和EyRIS(http://eyris.io)。《柳叶刀》曾就糖尿病视网膜病变的相关工作对黄教授进行了专访(https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(11)61075-1/fulltext)。

黄教授现为Lancet Digital Health、NEJM-AI, JAMA-Ophthalmology编委,曾为American Journal of Ophthalmology、Diabetes Care、Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (IOVS)、British Journal of Ophthalmology等期刊编委。现任亚太眼科影像学会(APOIS)会长、亚太玻璃体视网膜学会(APVRS)副会长、亚太眼科学会(APAO)理事及亚太远程眼科学会(APTOS)理事,并任职于黄斑协会执行委员会和国际眼科理事会(ICO)委员会;曾为新加坡医学专科学院眼科医师学院院长。黄教授是新加坡医学专科学院直选委员、助理院长,并任职于新加坡国家医学研究委员会(NMRC);曾为新加坡医学理事会的理事会成员。

黄教授荣获诸多奖项,如英联邦卫生部长奖、黄斑协会Arnall Patz奖、美国爱尔康研究院奖、美国艾森豪威尔基金。多次受邀作为荣誉讲座主讲人,如De Ocampo Lecture & the Jose Rizal Medal Lecture、Tano Lecture、the Fred Hollows Lecture、the Sir Runme Shaw Memorial Lecture、the Sir Norman McAlister Gregg Lecture。

他是新加坡国立大学顶尖研究员,两次获得杰出研究员奖(2004年和2009年)及澳大利亚墨尔本大学Woodward Medal。2010年,被授予新加坡全国杰出临床医师科学家奖和新加坡总统科学奖;2014年,荣获新加坡总统科学与科技奖,此为表彰新加坡健康科学贡献的最高荣誉。

黄教授是新加坡国家科学院院士(该院仅有两名医师院士)。2020年,当选美国国家完美体育·(中国)官方网站外籍院士;2021年,当选澳大利亚健康与医学科学院外籍(通讯)院士。

2023年,黄教授获北京市人民政府授予的第16届北京市“长城友谊奖”。
