Celebrating a Decade of Excellence: Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital Turns Ten

Situated in what was once known as "Asia's largest community," the Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital (referred to as BTCH), celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. Since its opening on November 28, 2014, Tsinghua Changgung has served over 10 million patients from around the world, marking a decade of significant growth and impact in the field of medical care and research. BTCH has achieved numerous milestones, reflecting its commitment to excellence in patient care, medical education, and scientific innovation.

  • Patient-Centered Care: BTCH has provided services to over 10 million patients, including international cases and rare disease management. The hospital has been recognized for its ability to handle complex and critical cases, such as the successful treatment of severe penetrating injuries in 2021, which required a multidisciplinary team approach.

  • With 60 clinical specialties, 7 centers of excellence, and 11 key specialties, the hospital has not only established itself as a leader in cutting-edge medical technology both domestically and internationally but has also set multiple world records.

  • The hospital's commitment to Precision Medical Treatment is evident through its groundbreaking surgeries and treatments, such as the international first-case of ex vivo liver resection and autologous liver transplantation for end-stage echinococcosis involving the right atrium, led by the team of academician Dong Jiahong, Dean of School of Clinical Medicine(Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital). The orthopedic team, led by Director Xiao Songhua, achieved a world-first in performing a high sacral tumor en bloc resection and 3D-printed prosthetic reconstruction. The neurosurgery team, under the guidance of Prof Wang Guihuai, set a world record with a 26-centimeter spinal cord intramedullary tumor resection, which was the longest reported in the literature at the time. The gastrointestinal surgery team, led by Li Yuanxin, successfully performed the country's first and Asia-Pacific's second modified abdominal organ cluster transplantation surgery.

The hospital's accreditation at the Application Level of Electronic Medical Record System and the third level for smart services underscores its dedication to innovation. The implementation of integrated medical services, including one-stop counters for outpatient, admission, discharge, and settlement, has significantly improved convenience.

  • Insurance Services: In 2015, the hospital began serving medical insurance patients and achieved direct settlements of cross-provincial medical bills in 2017. By 2021, it was designated as a Class A designated medical institution under the Beijing Basic Medical Insurance Program, allowing for real-time settlement without the need for prior selection of a designated point for Beijing's medical insurance holders.

  • National Recognition: With its operational data from the first three years, BTCH ranked in the top 100 for the first time in the national public hospital assessment, receiving an A+ rating, which it has maintained consecutively.

  • Education and Training: In December 2018, BTCH became one of the first national clinical teaching and training demonstration centers. It achieved the top score in the national residency physician annual business level test in 2019 and has 15 national standardized residency training bases and 2 specialized physician training pilot bases, completing the construction of a "three-level, two-type, five-degree" medical education system.

  • Research and Innovation: The hospital has supported over 430 research projects, including 10 major projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Key Technologie R&D Program. It has undertaken over 400 clinical trials and been granted 241 patents, with 2 Ministry of Education Science and Technology Achievement Awards and 2 He Liang He Li Fund Science and Technology Progress Awards.

  • Public Health: Tsinghua Changgung has played a crucial role in combating the COVID-19 pandemic, completing 8 emergency scientific research projects and applying the results effectively. It has also been committed to medical assistance in Xinjiang, Xizang, and Qinghai, aiming to eradicate echinococcosis in the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, known as the “Qingqing Model,”which earned it recognition for outstanding contributions in poverty alleviation in Beijing.

  • Medical Education: The hospital has been dedicated to cultivating “medical leader who integrates good doctors, scholars and leaders in the future” The Tsinghua University Outstanding Physicians Scientist, approved by the Ministry of Education in 2022, aims to train non-medical undergraduates who are passionate about medicine, adopting an integrated teaching model based on organ systems. Prof Wong Tien Yin, Senior Vice-Chancellor of Tsinghua Medicine, has spearheaded early clinical exposure for medical graduate students at BTCH, fostering a practical learning environment that integrates theory with hands-on experience, preparing the next generation of medical professionals for real-world healthcare challenges. 

  • Interdisciplinary Research: BTCH has established a clinical problem-driven medical research paradigm proposed by Dong Jiahong, promoting the integration of medical and engineering disciplines to address clinical needs. The hospital has been actively involved in establishing research platforms and has been approved as a national intelligent social governance experimental base and a key laboratory for smart health technology by the Ministry of Education.
