The Center for Physician-Scientist Development (CPSD) at Tsinghua Medicine has kicked off the second session of its “Clinical Research Methods Training Camp” on November 10, 2024, at Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital. This event signifies a new milestone in Tsinghua's efforts to cultivate physician-scientists and reflects the university's proactive and strategic approach to fulfilling the nation's demands for medical innovation and development.
The initiative serves as a platform for medical research talent cultivation, jointly promoted by Tsinghua Medicine and its affiliated hospitals, including Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, The First Hospital of Tsinghua University, and Tsinghua Yuquan Hospital. Leaders, academic experts, physician-scientist representatives, trainee camp participants, and representatives from the Beijing Chen Jianghe Public Welfare Foundation gathered to witness this significant moment.
At the opening ceremony, Secretary Zhou Yuehong of Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, representing the hospital leaders, extended warm congratulations to the commencement of the training camp. She emphasized the hospital's commitment to fostering the integration of medical education and research, acting as a catalyst for interdisciplinary integration between medicine and science and technology, and expressed the hope for continuous optimization of the training camp curriculum to cultivate high-end medical talents with international competitiveness.
Wong Tien Yin , Vice Provost of Tsinghua University and Senior Vice-Chancellor of Tsinghua Medicine, delivered the first lecture of the camp, elaborating initial purpose and vision behind the establishment of the CPSD Training Camp. As the initiator of the project, Wong Tien Yin highlighted that Tsinghua Medicine aims to provide young physician-scientists with cutting-edge academic resources and outstanding mentorship to bridge the gap between clinical practice and scientific research. He aims to cultivate medical talents with an international perspective, research capabilities, and an innovative spirit. Wong Tien Yin encouraged trainees to value this precious opportunity, to continuously hone their research literacy and practical skills, and to contribute their wisdom and strength to the path of China's new medical innovation and to meet the demands of the nation and society.
Wu Wei, Secretary-General of the Beijing Chen Jianghe Public Welfare Foundation, introduced Mr. Chen Jianghe's initial intentions in donating to academic causes and his support for Tsinghua Medicine. The foundation expressed gratitude for the high regard and hard work of the CPSD leaders and teachers, hoping that the "Chen Jianghe Scientific Research Seed Fund" would further promote the development of medical research talent training at Tsinghua University. The foundation remains focused on and supportive of medical education and scientific innovation, looking forward to the trainees’ pursuit of excellence, innovation, and service to society, with the expectation that they will become leading talents in the medical field.
Professor Qian Feng, Dean of the School of Pharmacy at Tsinghua University, Professor Jia Yichang, Vice Dean of the School of Basic Medical Sciences, and Secretary Teng Yichao of the Biomedical Engineering School attended the opening ceremony. They introduced breakthroughs in scientific research and clinical translation from the perspectives of pharmacy, basic medicine, and bioengineering, respectively. They stated that the design and implementation of the CPSD project would help promote the enhancement of Tsinghua's medical education and scientific research capabilities and strengthen the integration and interdisciplinary collaboration of multidisciplinary resources. They pledged to actively support CPSD’s teaching and academic exchanges and to encourage scientific research cooperation between the schools and the affiliated hospitals, greatly inspiring the CPSD trainees to continue on the path of medical scientific research innovation.
Professor Li Guoxin, Chief Medical Officer of Tsinghua University, a tenured professor, and Executive Director of CPSD, presented a lecture on “Surgical Technology Innovation Roadmap,” analyzing the innovation path of surgical technology within the IDEAL (Innovation, Development, Evaluation, Application, and Learning) framework. This lecture not only helped trainees understand the entire process of surgical technology innovation but also encouraged them to explore the possibilities of new technology applications in their respective clinical fields, aiming to become leaders driven by innovation.
Professor Ma Jing, Executive Director of CPSD, introduced the three-stage training model of the training camp, with a curriculum covering comprehensive teaching from theory to practice. The program focuses on mastering basic scientific research methods and emphasizes the practical abilities of clinical translation and interdisciplinary collaboration.
In the afternoon roundtable discussion, clinical scholars and trainee representatives from Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, The First Hospital of Tsinghua University, and Tsinghua Yuquan Hospital deeply discussed core challenges in the career development of physician-scientists, interdisciplinary innovation, and the balance between scientific research and clinical practice. The guests shared valuable experiences in the integration of scientific research and clinical practice, providing specific guidance on various issues faced by trainees, such as time management, platform selection, and resource integration. They encouraged everyone to make full use of Tsinghua University’s rich scientific research resources and platforms to integrate scientific research thinking into clinical practice. Participants actively demonstrate their deep passion for future scientific research work and high recognition of the project platform. This session injected confidence and motivation for the new generation of physician-scientists, promoting them to go further in medical scientific research innovation.
In 2024, CPSD provides a learning platform covering scientific research, clinical practice, and innovation for 128 trainees, with a new perspective and interdisciplinary teaching model. Looking to the future, the establishment and development of the Tsinghua Medicine CPSD project will further promote the integration of Chinese medical scientific research and clinical innovation, setting a new benchmark in talent cultivation and technological innovation, contributing new wisdom and strength to the medical development of Tsinghua University and the nation.
The Beijing Chen Jianghe Public Welfare Foundation donated 5 million RMB to establish the "Chen Jianghe Scientific Research Seed Fund" to support the Tsinghua Medicine Clinical Physician Scientist Development Center (CPSD) project, assisting outstanding members in carrying out scientific research projects.
