September 2010 – The Beijing Tsinghua Hospital began Phase 1 of construction of its comprehensive building, outpatient and wards facility, and administrative and power building.

The comprehensive building will have a floor area of 30,000 m², with 11 floors above ground and two floors underground, consisting primarily of a diagnosis center, teaching and research space, and living quarters for physicians and nurses. The outpatient and wards facility will occupy a floor area of more than 10,000 m², with 13 floors above ground and two underground. The administrative and power building will occupy nearly 8,000 m²in four floors above ground. The hospital’s overall design draws upon the model used by Taiwan’s Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, employing a centralized, economical construction style that brings to life the concepts of “Person- Centered Care” and a “Green Environment” through a humanistic space layout, high-efficiency generator installation, and ecologically conscious construction and power utilization.

The ground-breaking ceremony was attended by Tsinghua University Vice President Zhang Feng-Chang, Tsinghua University School of Medicine Vice President for Operations Shi Yi-Gong, Chair of the Academic Committee Professor Sun Fang-Lin, representatives of the Taiwan Chang Gung collaborating team, representatives from Tsinghua University School of Medicine, and representatives of the Infrastructure, Construction, and other offices of Tsinghua University. After hearing a concise report on the progress of construction and the future hospital’s operational plan, Vice President Zhang Feng-Chang delivered remarks. Professor Shi Yi-Gong and Tsinghua University Office of Construction Vice Chair Xing Yi separately congratulated the hospital construction team.

According to the construction plan, the comprehensive building will be completed and operational at the end of 2011, while construction of the outpatient and wards building and administrative and power buildings will be complete at the end of 2013.
